With Liverpool still in the third of Group A, they needed a 1-0 win over Olympiakos or win by a 2 goal deficit to be in the Champions League knockout phase. If not, they would have to await the result in the other group game and pray that Deportivo could steal a win against Monaco to ensure Knockout stage qualification. Olympiakos on the other hand had to at least grab a draw to go through. With much at stake for both teams, neither could let up against their opponent.
Much so for Liverpool, whose captain and gem of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard has warned the club of at least silverware this season and Champions league qualification or else, he's out for a bigger and fatter paycheck elsewhere. More likely in Roman's own collection.
And the game displayed all the hunger that the players had wanted.
The warnings were there much early in the game. Baros found the net just 2 minutes after the whistle had blown, just to be disallowed by the ref for a foul on the defender.
In the 21 minute, Alonso's free kick found the heels of Gerrard who brilliantly flicked it with a wonderful piece of technique and sent the ball home, just to be stopped by the woodwork. Close shave for Olympiakos.
1-0. In the 26 minute, Olympiakos had a free kick after skipper Hyypia tripepd Rivaldo just outside the area. Rivaldo did not disappoint as he sent a curler through the porous wall, leaving Kirkland failing his arms in the air. Liverpool to blame for their disintegrated wall.
So with Liverpool down 1-0 at half time, it seemed an almost uphill and impossible task to get through and they heard that Monaco were leading in the other game. It was time for Benitez to showcase his master stroke. On went Florent Sinama Pongolle, whose contribution to the game was immediate.
1-1. Hyypia sent a long ball to Kewell on the left flank with brilliant control and went past the rooted defender and sent an accurate and perfectly weighted pass oast the face of goal, leaving Sinama Pongolle with a rather simple tap in. Good movement in the play and a lifeline for Liverpool.
A counter attack sees Carragher sending a long ball to Baros who heads it down to the path of Gerrard. With a brilliant piece of skill he volleyst he ball from way outside the area, the ball slipping past Greece keeper Nikopolidis and into the net. But once again the goal is disallowed for a foul by Baros on the defender. Wasted chance.
Mellor comes on in in the 77 minute. Things change from here. Liverpool gain possesion of theb all easily and the morale of the squad shoots way high. While Olympiakos, on the other hand, was losing its morale as fast as their coach was losing his temper.
The response from the super subs could be seen once more immediately as a free kick was given to Liverpool in the 80 minute.
2-1. Alonso takes the freekick and sends a dangerous ball into the area. A clearance from the box falls to Carragher who was impended by a charging defender. The crowd goes wild for claims of a penalty but out comes the cool headed hero, who plays till the whistle, which never came, and sends a cross back into the box and Nunez almost heads it home, only to be stopped by NIkopolidis' fumbling hands. The loose ball was charged down with great tenacity by Mellor. Great hunger by Liverpool. Is the side finally maturing under the hands of Benitez?
With so little time left, could Liverpool stage the comeback of a century?
3-1. In the 86 minute, Liverpool starts the move and goal of the match. Carragher receives a ball from defence and crosses to Mellor who heads it to the path of the fired up Gerrard. With a whack of his right leg from outside the area, he sends the Kop wild and the Olympiakos fans stunned and shocked. Nikopolidis had no chance at all. What a rocket.
With the final whistle blown, the Kop goes wild once more, carrying with them hope and life in their Champions league dream. A brilliant game won. Could Gerrard stay on? Could they win silverware this season? Has the team really matured? Well, all clues point to a yes in my cards.
